WINTER WORKSHOPS

Development Lab for Film & Theater Artists

This unique lab focuses on a 6-week development phase. Based on texts from productions currently in development, participants will focus on putting text selections on their feet. The goal is to develop the text, the cast, direction, and/or design. At the end of the 6-week period, some may choose to follow the project toward a production, or use the skills developed to create another work, or to continue further with another development session. This is a deep dive into more meaningful performance, open to committed, working artists 18+ in theater and film.

Open to new scripts for stage or screen in the Third Development Phase. First Phase is a SeedWorks plan, Second Phase is a table read organized by the author garnering two statements of support, and Third Phase is a public presentation requiring some form of rehearsal and an independent facilitator to monitor the 20-minute response without the author’s input. If at least four statements of support are then accrued, a workshop may be developed.

These steps may appear to slow down the process, but we’ve found they actually speed it up for eventual production, as they earn organic support from the creative team.

Over 300 artists work and play at PushPush each year, in various capacities, and many hold a piece of the puzzle you’re trying to solve: how do I make the art I want to make and still pay the rent? Quality art requires strong skills. If you have specific needs or session suggestions for maker's workshops, let us know! We have space and seek to host a variety of skill-based learning opportunities.

Coming up, we will have sessions for Sewing, Hat-making, Video Production + Post, Acting for Beginners, Private Acting for the Experienced Performer, Lighting, Set Building, and Public Speaking led by gifted artists on our campus.
Stay tuned and/or email inquiries or requests to info@pushpusharts.com.

Interested in leading a maker's session?
We aim for top-tier standards, with offerings in line with other professional companies, universities, and conservatories globally. We stay current with evolving practices and strive to remain up-to-date. To put your name in the hat to lead a maker’s session:
-First, complete a minimum of one full series (at least 6 weeks) in the focus of your project and lay out what you will develop.
-Second, work with a facilitator to train on the campus and organization’s mission in order to see where your project connects.
-Third, lead a supervised session and seek board approval (based on your success in improving the series).

***OUR APPROACH TO STAGING PRODUCTIONS***
While our focus is on process, emphasizing skill and depth, projects can often evolve into full productions, though not guaranteed. We intentionally avoid traditional auditions, preferring to cast through hands-on workshops and skill development programs.

***LEADING WORKSHOPS AT PUSHPUSH ARTS***

As a general rule, we avoid the word “classes,” as we are all working artists and PushPush is not a school. We have a planning process—developed over decades—to push our abilities, and expect participants to join the conversation. Our facilitators have particular objectives that aim to lead to greater opportunities (a production, position, etc.), and everything emanates from our own strategic planning. So we have a clear understanding of the projects and initiatives that are poised to receive funding, whether it's already secured or in the pipeline. Every session we offer is focused on preparing for tangible, real-world outcomes. Many of our lead artists have a track record of helping other artists secure work, build careers, and access new opportunities. Many notable artists have emerged from the PushPush process, and we continue to provide space, time, and resources that foster a more sustained life in the arts. We encourage potential facilitators to seek out more information about this process if you are interested in leading workshops at PushPush. Reach out to us at info@pushpusharts to learn more and arrange a shadowing experience.

***ABOUT PUSHPUSH ARTS***

OUR FOCUS: At PushPush, we emphasize the importance of process over product. We believe that focusing on the development of craft, skill-building, and strategic planning prepares artists for real opportunities, rather than merely producing finished works. Our structured approach, primarily through our SeedWorks Development Lab, helps artists refine their craft, explore new opportunities, and grow in their careers, rather than simply focusing on the end result. This process-driven approach ensures that each artist is ready for more meaningful, long-term success.

MISSION + VISION: Our mission is to incubate artists and their original work through creative development and programmatic opportunities that focus on collaboration, inclusion, experimentation and innovation. Our Vision is to serve as a vast creative hub for generative artists across multiple disciplines and offer resources, mentorship and residency programs, affordable space, and critical response that enables artists to advance their creative developments – and their careers – toward excellence and sustainability.
